Self-control struggle

Self-control struggle

Today over on the Blessed Is She Instagram taking over the Instastories to talk about this month’s virtue: self-control. I felt called to expand a little on what we were talking about over there.

I’m going to admit something to you. It may be no surprise or a complete shock or somewhere in between to read this. But, I have trouble with obsessive compulsive tendencies and controlling my environment. It has manifested differently over the years and depending on what life state I am in at the moment.

But I thought, if I’m going to talk about it, then let’s really talk about it and dig in. Now, in regards to self-control, I have not struggled with issues with food or substances or other addictions. But I do struggle with the need to control what is going on around me.

Someone once asked me, “How do you keep your home so organized and clean with young kids and working full-time?” Well, when I’m being superficial or blasé about it, I’ll say something like, Oh you know, everything has it’s place and I do a little every day so it doesn’t become too chaotic.

Once a Regal, always a Regal

Once a Regal, always a Regal

This morning, during the wee hours, I was nursing Theo. Sometimes I can fall right back to sleep after feeding him and sometimes he takes more time settling down. Usually when I have to be awake at 1am, I start reading on my phone or scrolling social media. This morning, however, I was met with the news that there had been another mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, California. Just a stone’s throw away from my alma mater, California Lutheran University.

I scrolled through Breaking News story after story and the reports were true — a mass shooting had taken place at Borderline Bar & Grill, one of the only places that college kids hung out in this sleepy little town. You see, Thousand Oaks has been hailed as one of the safest towns in the entire country and safety was what I experienced while I went to college there.

Quirks

Quirks

When you live with someone for a while, you sometimes forget all the little quirks you have about yourself and those you live with. Everyone is pretty used to each other so those little idiosyncrasies about one another go unnoticed or, at least, we become desensitized to them. (Well, that is until you’re over-tired or over-worked or just had it up to here then all those traits about each other come screaming back and they suddenly become annoying, buuuut that’s a different story.)

It got me to thinking about my own quirks. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, good or bad, normal or not so normal, they just scream Samantha. So in honor of one of my favorite Instagram hashtags, here are some #Fridayintroductions, quirky edition.

What are your quirks? Drop them in the comments below and help me feel more normal, ha!

An interview with Emma

An interview with Emma

Emma turned four and a half years old this week. (Insert exclamations of consternation and the how is this possibles and the where has the times gones here). I usually wax emotional about all things milestones, but instead of crying to you, I’ll just cry to myself while I look at baby pictures of her. But, for your enjoyment, I did a little interview with Miss Emma Badger in honor of her half-birthday.

What’s your name? “Emma W”

How old are you? “Four and a half”

What is your favorite food? “Strawberries and mac and cheese and pizza and milk and pink lemonade.”

What is your favorite color? “Um some of the colors. I don’t like all of the colors. Light pink, light purple, light blue, just purple, pink, and blue.”

What do you want to be when you grow up? “Just like you. Being like a mommy. They go to work and they go to a friend’s house.
Um, a dentist!”
