My Happiness Equation

Wednesday, 16 October 2013

In today’s world of instant gratification and the ability to share every single thought with the world, it’s easy to get stuck in a woe-is-me downward spiral. I get it, people love to commiserate together. We constantly throw out our negative vibes and get stuck at the pity party. Well I have to say, NO THANK YOU. I’m done with participating in this notion that in order to bond with someone, you have to have share in life’s misery.

Although I have tripped up at times, this past year I’ve been trying to dedicate myself to choosing happiness and focusing on the positive. I know that negative things happen in life, but I try to actively choose happiness in order to move forward and live fully. Here are a few little things that help me choose happiness when life gets complicated.

1 // A go-to drink at Starbucks. Although I love the holiday inspired drinks and treats from Starbucks, I always find comfort in my go-to grande, no water, soy, chai tea latte. A few sips in and I can calm my mind.

2 // A favorite classic book. It is so wonderful to curl up with an old favorite. I re-read Pride and Prejudice at least once a year and it always warms my heart.

3 // A go-to outfit. It can get stressful staring into your closet with no idea what to wear. Having an outfit go-to takes the stress out of choosing and gives me confidence. I’m partial to dark skinnies, a colored blouse, and ballet flats.

4 // A sense of gratitude. I can tell you that this one is a life changer. Be grateful for each moment of each day, for they are all gifts. Finding something to be grateful for, can make the gloomiest day just a little brighter.

5 // A hobby or favorite activity. I love to scrapbook and bake goodies. I can go to my own little world while I bake a batch of cookies or make a homemade card.

6 // An accurate sense of self. Get real with yourself. Be honest about your abilities, your personality, and your goals. Love yourself - including the wonderful quirks that make you, you.

7 // A go-to playlist. Music is transcendent, period. Make a playlist just for yourself, press play, and enjoy.

8 // A couple of party tricks. It’s tough to sit in the corner in a crowd and watch the clock tick by and feel happy. Get up and mingle! Know what you have to offer and play it up.

9 // A best friend. Paul is my best friend, but I’m also blessed with a handful of amazing friends. Having someone to talk to and confide in is very important.

10 // An ability to laugh at yourself. Have a sense of humor. I’m a big nerd and I embrace it. My own nerdiness cracks me up.

What makes you happy? What is your happiness equation?
