Blogging

On blogging - Go with your gut

Normally I follow the old adage, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” If I read something online or on someone else’s blog and I don’t like it, I just ignore it and move on. I don’t usually like to rant about things and I don’t waste time commenting or saying anything negative on someone else’s blog because truthfully, that is not very graceful. {However, if there is an actual social injustice going on, I will stand up for what is right, but that’s another story}.

But the other day, I was reading a post on someone’s blog that really annoyed me. I took to Twitter and expressed that I was getting a little sick of self-proclaimed “expert bloggers” {cough, know-it-alls} who at least once a week are spouting “advice” and “how-tos” for blogging.

I don’t know about you but I find that there are two different types of experts when it comes to blogging:

1 // Individuals who have created amazing, content-based blogs about their lives, loves, style, brand, business, etc. They have created a great blogging space which draws you in and keeps you coming back. They rarely share advice on how to blog successfully, but instead lead by example and share what works for them. They say, hey I do it this way and that has worked for me, but feel free to do it your way too!

Or,

2 // Individuals who constantly tell you what to do or what not to do for blogging to draw in more readers, get sponsors, increase blog traffic, etc. Instead of offering insight on what has worked for them, they try to put out a cookie-cutter guide for what makes a “successful” blog. Their tone is often condescending and makes you second guess your own blogging voice. They say, if you don’t blog this way or if your blog doesn’t look this way, I won’t want to read it.

{You can probably assume which type of expert to whom I tend to listen and which type to whom I roll my eyes.}

This lead me to thinking about why I blog and how important it is to just go with your gut and ignore the “experts”.

I have the Fleetwood Mac song, Go Your Own Way playing in my head.

Now, I don’t have thousands of readers or have people knocking down my door for sponsorships, but I do have a few loyal readers and fellow bloggers whom I have come to consider friends. To me, blogging is all about self-expression and finding your voice. My blog is a place to share my life, my loves, my interests, what inspires me, and glimpses into my crazy head. I try to go with my gut when it comes to what I post, how I post, and when I post.

I congratulate all of you who are able to grow your blog into something that allows you to make an income as well as share your blogging voice, you rock! I look up to bloggers who have great content, have unique and personal blogging styles, are passionate about their readers, have an honest voice, and clearly just go with their guts.

I will continue read blogs that offer personal insights into blogging. I will continue to read blogs that say, this is what works for me and I want to share that with you. I will continue to read blogs from people who are clearly passionate about what they are blogging about. You are all my inspiration.

Okay, mini-rant over.

Do you ever get annoyed with the self-proclaimed experts? What do you do to follow your blogging gut?

Happy Friday to you all! This was my first full week of maternity leave and I definitely got a lot done to prepare for baby. On Tuesday, I wrote out my to-do list for all the last minute baby stuff and I have checked everything off of it! Whew.

Today I’m sharing my favorite links from this week. Enjoy!

I plan to take a lot of naps this weekend. I have not been sleeping well {big surprise}, as the insomnia has really kicked in. I have been waking up in the middle of the night with thoughts of our little one and all my hopes and anxieties rush in. I guess I’m training for the sleep deprivation marathon.

Word of the day :: Faith

Happy Friday my friends! And a very happy Pi Day! {Nerd alert!} Whew, I have been quite exhausted lately, but I have come to expect it and I try to power through. It’s getting harder and harder to sleep and I am beyond ready to meet my little one. Today’s word of the day has been filling my heart lately.

[feyth] - noun; origin - Middle English

1. confidence or trust in a person or thing

2. belief that is not based on proof

Syn - trust; belief; confidence.

I am looking forward to this new chapter in our lives. I have faith that I will have a smooth labor and delivery. I have faith that we will have a heathy baby girl. I have faith in my innate abilities to mother this little one. It can be daunting and sometimes I worry that I will not be able to do this, but faith must prevail. I am confident that we will be wonderful parents. I believe that we have a wonderful support system of family and friends. I have faith that God will bless us and that bringing this beautiful baby into the world is written in the stars. Whenever I start to panic or doubt myself, I will remember to keep the faith.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! What does faith mean to you?

Stand up for something

Generally, on this blog I tend to write about my life {it is my blog after all}. However, every once in a while I think it is important to also use my blogging voice to talk about things that are important, not only to me, but to {what should be} all of us.

Today, I’m talking about the importance of our vocabulary choices. It may sound like a weird topic, but it has been something that is weighing heavily on my heart. I’m not talking about using the correct word tenses here, I’m talking about using words that describe specific groups of people in a derogatory manner. There is one word in particular that I am utterly SICK of hearing.

Stop using the word retarded.

We’ve all heard it…

This traffic is so retarded.

Stop being such a retard.

This assignment is such a waste of time, it’s so retarded

I am cringing just typing those sentences out. We have the entire English language in front of us, yet people still choose to use a word describing an individual with a developmental or intellectual disability in a demeaning and derogatory fashion. This needs to stop.

Every time this word is used in this manner, we are diminishing and excluding an entire population of people and it is not right. When I hear this word dropped in everyday conversation, I am both saddened and disgusted.

The problem lies in the nonchalance surrounding the usage of the word. Usually, the R-word is not used to actively discriminate against those with intellectual disabilities but that does not make it okay and we should encourage those around us to stop using the R-word.

R-Word.org tells us to spread the word to end the word and I urge you to visit their website and take the pledge to eliminate this word. All it takes is a little conviction to say to someone, “hey, stop using that word”. I know it may be hard to stand up for something, especially in passing conversation, but doing what is right is more important.

This is just one thing I actively stand up for. What do you stand up for? Have you ever had to pluck up the courage to stand up for something?
